Who is B.C. Skipalis?
My name is B.C. Skipalis, and I am a social worker with three decades of experience working with underserved populations from an intersectional, empowerment-based perspective. I earned my MSW in Social Work Policy and Administration from Florida State University in 2001, and I am currently based in northeast Florida.
Expertise and Experience
I am a public policy expert, as well as an expert in contract compliance and organizational capacity-building, with the majority of my career spent working in the non-profit sector in Florida, at both the state and local levels.
My social work training has provided me with a strong grounding in understanding the complexities of public funding for private, non-profit organizations, and my decades of experience in contract management and compliance have helped me to understand not only the ways in which legal and regulatory compliance are built into the funding and contract monitoring processes, but also the importance of ensuring that contract deliverables and the mechanisms in place for data collection and reporting work hand in hand even before a grant application has been submitted.
My substantive areas of expertise include working with survivors of intimate partner violence & gender-based violence; working with immigrants & people who are limited English proficient; working with people with disabilities, people who are D(d)eaf or hard-of-hearing, and people with HIV/AIDS; and working with the LGBTQ+ community.
I also have doctoral-level research training and experience, with a focus on the intersections of violence, discrimination, and public policy.
Current Projects:
- Longitudinal study of the effectiveness of rapid rehousing for survivors of intimate partner violence for a large domestic violence center,
- Developing a primary prevention curriculum for LGBTQ+ youth that addresses bullying and dating violence issues specific to the LGBTQ+ experience, and
- Updating an academic research and writing curriculum for social science undergraduate and graduate students (social work, psychology, sociology, criminology, etc.) that incorporates instruction on the APA 7th Edition style guide and teaches students how to use AI tools responsibly – and sparingly – for academic research.
